The difference in practice
Offline-tolerant apps assume a connection and degrade when it disappears: a spinner here, a "retry" there, a form that loses your answers if you background the app at the wrong time. The network is the happy path, and offline is an error state.
Offline-first flips that. The device is the source of truth for the day's work, and the network is something the app takes advantage of when it happens to be there. There is no wrong moment to lose signal, because no step of the inspection depends on having it.
Download before you leave
In the morning, on the office Wi-Fi or wherever you have coverage, the app pulls down your assigned jobs: the forms, the templates behind them, the units each inspection covers, and any answers already captured. From that point on, the day's work lives on the device.
Capture everything on site
With no connection at all, you can:
- Answer the full form: every question type, including the conditional questions that appear as your answers unfold.
- Take photos: attached to the answers they evidence, shared across the units they cover.
- Collect drawn signatures: captured on the device at the moment of submission.
- Sign off defects: verify a fix on site and record it, without waiting for bars.
The form on the phone is the same form as in the browser, with the same validation rules, so what's complete on site is complete, full stop, not "complete pending a server check".
Submit offline — really
This is where most inspection apps quietly draw the line: fill in what you like offline, but submitting needs a connection. Which means the day's paperwork isn't done until you're back in coverage, and the form sits in limbo in between.
In Saundy Inspect, pressing submit works offline too. The finished inspection (answers, photos, signatures) goes into an outbox on the device, marked done from the surveyor's point of view. On to the next job.
Sync takes care of itself
When coverage returns, walking back to the van or on the office Wi-Fi that evening, the outbox drains automatically. Submissions upload, report versions are issued, defects raise from flagged answers, and the back office sees the day's work land. Nothing to remember, nothing to babysit.
